The only restriction with the recent release of ESXi 3.5u4 the VI API has gone back to read-only mode and user's with the free version of ESXi will not be able to use the scripts. If you have an external source that can initiate the shutdown process that would be great, but the solution was developed for those that were using the free version of ESXi who wanted a VM residing on the host to monitor their UPS and initiate VM and host shutdown. Regarding my tool I've tested this on ESXi hosts but it will work on both classic ESX and ESXi, it utilizes the VI API and based on a configuration file it'll shutdown host(s) in a certain order and then finally shutdown the last host which will contain the VM kicking off the shutdown process. I can't speak on behalf of the PCNS tools, it sounds like ymmv. So yes, I did get the result I wanted, but not by using the VMWare settings. The script pretty much inventorys all running VM's on that ESX host, and gracefully shutdown those VM's. I was able to run a script on the ESX host (triggered by UPS event), that does shutdown all guest running from that ESX. By case, I mean: a shutdown command, a snmp trap from an UPS, a special UPS command?Īs far as I'm concerned, this (shutdown) feature does not work correctly. To be honest I can't find any resource that tell's me in which case(s) ESX executes those gracefull VM shutdown commands.
And Yes, VMWare tools are installed on the VM.Įverytime trigger the UPS event, the ESX shutdown (there is a delay of 5min, which works fine), but the VM's just keep running until the ESX is powered off.įor testing purposes, I even tried to do a shutdown from the virtual center VI console for that host (canceling the screen that asks to enter maintenance mode). Also, I've set the 'shutdown action' on 'guest shutdown'. I've set one test esx host with enabled "virtual machine startup/shutdown" settings, and I've set the shutdown delay on 5 seconds. Installing PowerChute is easy, but the shutdown settings in "virtual machine startup/shutdown" does not work in my case. At least I can't get it to work that way. Were you able to get it to work?
